Several reasons I refuse to support the Komen Foundation
February 03, 2012

Reason One: Litigation.
They have spent over a $1 million in legal fees to sue other charities using the word 'cure' in their names. Even if they aren't trying to cure the same damned disease! They also go after charities that use the color pink. Yes, that's correct--they claim they own the legal rights to the word cure, and the color pink. And they spend your money, donated in the cause of breast cancer research and awareness, to do it. They call it "responsible stewardship of donor funds".

Reason Two: Business.
Its more about giving corporations an easy way to make themselves look good that it is about helping women or fighting cancer. And once a foundation becomes a major corporate entity like this, the truth is that it is no longer in the entitys best interests to cure the disease. If the disease were to go away, where would that leave the charity? Ohand all that money they spend on awareness? For-profit companies have to call that money advertising dollars.

Reason Three: Finances.
Susan G. Komen for the Cure only spends a possible 53% of its research funding for a cure. And that would come out to only about eleven percent of their total revenue.

Reason Four: Politics.
They are so greedy that they are willing cave in to the fundies and screw over the extremely under-served women who look to Planned Parenthood for their mammograms, just to snatch more cash money from godbaggers who hate PP and try to shove their socio-political agenda down the throats of American women. And when they are confronted with the (wonderfully heartening) backlash, they backpedal and the cave again.

Reason Five: Aesthetics.
ENOUGH with the fucking PINK!
February 3, 2012 9:26 AM SEATTLE (CBS Seattle/AP) The Susan G. Komen Foundation is teaming up with Seattle gun distributor Discount Gun Sales, LLC, to sell a pink handgun to help raise money for the breast cancer organization. The gun, a Walther P-22, is already available for purchase at $429.99.

Reading: "The Younger Set" (1907), by Robert W. Chambers.

"Jane Allen of the Sub Team" (1917), by Edith Bancroft. Impetuous, proud, free-spirited daughter of a Montana rancher goes east to attend the same college as her late mother, and learns many things. This is book one of a series; I have the first three (not sure how many there are in total).

"The Second Generation" (1906), by David Graham Phillips. Wealthy flour magnate cuts off funds to his spoiled and pretentious children, forcing them to grow up and get their shit together.

Listening: The Icicle Works, U2, Adele, The B-52s.
