A scout is
March 28, 2009

Trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent--but not reliable?

If youre going to come around and hang a bag on my doorknob that says youre having a food drive, please do me the favor of showing up the following week to pick up the food .

I had three boxes and four bags of groceries out there by 8:30 this morning, and when no one had shown up by 2:00, I called the Shalom Center to see what was up. What was up was: the drive was all wrapped up, and we got overlooked. (How the heck did they miss us? I have mentioned before that we live on one of the main streets of town, right?) So Spouse and I loaded it all into the back of the car, along with the next-door neighbors donation, and schlepped it over there ourselves.

What else was I going to do? I had $80 worth of groceries sitting there; I had to do something. (Supporting Scouting and supporting the food bank are two of my pet concerns--hence the big buy.)

Spouse and I are having an otherwise quiet day; we got up and ran errands this morning, then came home and did quite a few chores inside and out. Im having a leisurely crack at the laundry, and just kind of puttering. We recorded a TCM movie this morning--the Mickey Rooney version of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn--and well probably watch that over dinner tonight. A peaceful evening together.
Did someone say dinner? Well, since we are really trying to waste less food around here, this has been declared an eat-em-up weekend. Tonight were having the pan of baked ziti and the last of the garlic toast from the freezer, with a salad to use up the tomato in the veggie bin. Tomorrow includes a hot breakfast (eggs to use up), and for dinner, a roast turkey breast accompanied by the potatoes and carrots we need to finish, plus the rest of the stuffing from Spouses last batch--another freezer item. That meal plan will go a long way towards our goal of not putting half our food budget in a hefty bag on the curb every week.
Well, its about 4:30, and it isnt snowing yet. Too soon to gloat, though--were gonna get slammed:
A WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 7 PM THIS EVENING TO NOON CDT SUNDAY. A MIXTURE OF RAIN...SLEET AND SNOW WILL SPREAD INTO THE AREA LATE THIS AFTERNOON AND EARLY THIS EVENING BEFORE CHANGING TO ALL SNOW DURING THE EVENING. THE SNOW WILL BE HEAVY AT TIMES LATER TONIGHT INTO EARLY SUNDAY. SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ENHANCING THE SNOWFALL ARE ALSO EXPECTED OVERNIGHT...WHICH WOULD PRODUCE SNOWFALL RATES OF 1 TO 2 INCHES AN HOUR. THE SNOW WILL GRADUALLY DIMINISH LATE SUNDAY MORNING AS THE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM TRACKS AWAY FROM THE AREA. TOTAL ACCUMULATIONS OF 6 TO 12 INCHES ARE EXPECTED BEFORE THE SNOW DIMINISHES SUNDAY MORNING. IN ADDITION TO THE HEAVY SNOWFALL...NORTH WINDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH...GUSTING AT TIMES TO 35 MPH ARE EXPECTED. GUSTS MAY REACH 40 MPH NEAR THE LAKE. THE COMBINATION OF HEAVY SNOW AND STRONG WINDS WILL CREATE NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS AT TIMES. TRAVEL IS EXPECTED TO BECOME TREACHEROUS OVERNIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING.
