walking the doggerel
August 20, 2005, 6:52 A.M.

While walking my dog in the rain this morning (the only thing strong enough to overcome her hatred of water is her love of walks)I found myself comosing a little poem about it.

AT SIX O'CLOCK WE TOOK OUR WALK,
OUT IN THE DREARY RAIN
AND OUR LITTLE DOGGY
WAS HAPPY, THOUGH SOGGY
ON ACCOUNT OF SHE'S BATSHIT INSANE!

As it was a long walk, I had time to further compose and refine the idea, and came home with this:

AT SIX O'CLOCK WE TOOK OUR WALK,
'THOUGH RAINY IT WAS, AND FOGGY
SHE HEADED WEST UPON HER QUEST--
DETERMINED LITTLE DOGGY.

FOR SATURDAYS HOLD PROMISE
OF A WALK THAT'S EXTRA-LONG--
A MILE OR MORE FROM DOOR TO DOOR...
AND OUR GIRL STILL GOING STRONG.

AND SNIFFING. OH, THE SNIFFING!
THE SQUIRRELS, AND BUNNIES TOO!
(AND DON'T FORGET THE JOB AT HAND...
THE PEEING AND THE POO)

HER EXTRA-SPECIAL PLEASURE, CALLED
ON ACCOUNT OF RAIN?
GIVE UP HER GREATEST TREASURE?
COME ON...DON'T BE INSANE.

It isn't poetry of genius. It's barely poetry at all. But at 6:00 am on a rainy Saturday, before coffee, it ain't half-bad.
